A reliable way to replace missing teeth is with dentures. They are a tried-and-true solution that millions of people have. You might have a pair yourself and are enjoying the confidence they give you. It’s important you brush them to keep them in great shape, but should you do this while they are in your mouth? Here’s why it may be a bad habit and how to properly clean this prosthetic.
Why Shouldn’t I Brush While Wearing My Dentures?
While you can brush your dentures while wearing them, it’s generally ill-advised. You won’t be able to clear plaque and debris as effectively compared to if you took them out. This can then turn into buildup that can cause unpleasant odors or even stains. So, you may start to feel self-conscious about your smile.
Your gums can also be affected. Bacteria will accumulate under your restoration and attack the soft tissues. You’ll be at a higher risk of sores, infection, and denture stomatitis. This condition causes inflammation, a burning sensation, and redness, so the fit may become uncomfortable.
If you are rushing for time and need to clean your dentures, then you can brush with them in. But just be sure you properly care for them when you have the time too.
How Are Dentures Properly Cleaned?
To avoid any trouble in your restored grin, you will need to scrub all sides of your dentures. It’s best to do this twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush or prosthetic-specific brush. Use clear, gentle soap and gently scrub to get plaque off. Don’t forget to wipe down your mouth as well. Getting buildup off your gums and inner cheeks will prevent it from transferring.
When your prosthetic is all clean, you should take a quick minute to look for any damage or sores on your gums. That way, you spot anything worrying early and get it sorted out sooner rather than later. As nighttime rolls around, make sure you soak your restoration while you sleep. This allows you to flush out the pores and allows your gums to breathe.
Although brushing with your dentures while wearing them might seem natural, it’s best if you simply take them out. That way, you can properly clean them and get the most out of your tooth replacement.
