If you’re dressing up as a werewolf, mummy, or zombie this Halloween, then you naturally want your teeth to look a little dingy, yellow, and brittle. Of course, you don’t want them looking that way year-round. That’s one of the many reasons it’s so important to take proactive measures to care for your smile throughout spooky season. If you’re unsure where to start, don’t worry – here are a few easy tips for keeping your fangs healthy this Halloween!

Tip #1: Be Selective About the Candy You Choose

Jumping straight into it; some candy is “better” when it comes to your oral health. Dark chocolate is a great example because it contains antioxidants, is low in sugar, and doesn’t cling to your teeth. Lollipops, jawbreakers, and other hard candies are some treats that make the “worst” list since they can cause one of your teeth to crack if you bite into them too soon. That’s why it’s so important to be selective about the candy you choose to indulge in!

Tip #2: Eat Candy with Your Lunch or Dinner

During mealtimes, your saliva production increases, which helps remove food particles and other debris from your tooth. As a result, eating a piece or two of candy alongside your lunch or dinner can help reduce your chances of cavities. Just make sure to thoroughly rinse your mouth with clean water afterward. Then, about 20 minutes later, complete your oral hygiene regimen.

Tip #3: Drink Water Instead of Sugary Beverages

Pumpkin spice lattes are just one example of a delicious drink that’s loaded with added sugar. Since you’re already at an increased risk for developing tooth decay during this time of the year, it’s best to stick to water as often as you can. In addition to keeping you hydrated, this beverage won’t stain your teeth and will help rinse away any lingering residue or food particles from your teeth.

Tip #4: Consistently Brush, Floss, and Rinse with Mouthwash

Although this time of year can get hectic, it’s of the utmost importance that you continue to prioritize your oral hygiene regimen. That starts with using a fluoridated toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your teeth twice a day. To reduce your risk of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems, you should floss and rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash each evening too!
